We all know the scent of the great American pastime. Nothing gets our saliva flowing like the smell of that wonderful smoky aroma in the air. However BBQ-ing doesn’t only have to equal greasy fatty burgers and a plethora of unwholesome calories. There are so many great healthy alternatives to use as an excuse to fire up your grill and not feel any guilt! The key, obviously, is to know what to grill and how well the grilling will enhance its natural flavors. For example lettuce, while an uncommon choice, lettuce is highly enhanced in flavor when grilled. Also Tomatoes, once wrapped in foil and set on the grill, develop a velvety mushy kind of texture and a dark crispy exterior which blasts a raw tomato out of the waters. Other great options to grill are potatoes (also wrapped in foil), turkey bacon set right on the grill, and I even succeeded in grilling some organic tator tots on a sheet of aluminum foil sprinkled with freshly grated black pepper and parmesan of course. Other great examples of some awesome healthy grill staples are onions, asparagus, and carrots! Be careful though, some veggies like eggplant and zucchini turn into dry pieces of chewy strips.
